Do all elopements have to be in the mountains, beside a waterfall or with an amazing evergreen view? Heck no. Are those places gorgeous? Yes, at least I think so. Can the city be pretty too? Of course! It's just a different kind of pretty. If you are thinking of getting married at a courthouse, or more specifically, the Seattle Municipal Courthouse you can certainly have a wonderful and beautiful urban elopement wedding day.
Never have I been booked for a wedding on such short notice, but it has become one of my favorite wedding shoots of the year. Kristen and Angus have been together for years — many years, and they decided that you know, now would be a good time to tighten this knot they had already looped together.
They invited only immediate family, decided to have a courthouse ceremony, and integrate their love of the city into their portraits. Just because you get eloped, or married at the courthouse does not mean you are sacrificing special moments of love, laughter, elegance, and sophistication, because that’s exactly what their wedding day was full of.
They got all the special treatments and such as most any other bride and groom would get. She found a wedding dress she loved that was perfect for her soft, cheerful and elegant nature for the urban setting at Nordstrom, and had her beautiful hair, and natural toned make up done at Gene Juarez. She frosted herself with Kendra Scott earrings and a Necklace by Nardi, both found at Nordstrom too.
Her summery hand-gathered styled flower bouquet was done by her old friend Elizabeth of who runs a local flower business in Seattle called Elizabeth Designs. For her short notice wedding, Kristen wasn’t sure if she was even going to be able to have flowers, but her talented friend came through and delivered a gorgeous bouquet.
I met Angus at the courthouse and Kristen arrived by Uber. We started the day off with their portrait session at urban locations close to the courthouse. Seriously, like only a block away. It was clear to me how much Angus adores Kristen, as he would often whisper sweet honey words to her to make her glow even more than she already was when she arrived. His gentle touches on her arm, and compliments in her ear are what can really make wedding photos go from great, to touching. I’m so glad they trusted me and were comfortable with me so that their love showed through their photos.
Their family soon arrived and after waiting a bit, the judge called their names. He brought us into a corner window room so they could say their vows with the view of the city behind them. The judge had previously asked them about their relationship and incorporated details about them in their ceremony which turned an assumed stagnant ceremony into an unexpected personalized, fun, and touching ceremony. Does every judge do this? I don't know, but we were so happy with how the Honorable Damon Shadid conducted our 5 minute ceremony. After it was said and done Angus was the one who needed to wipe away his happy tears. Their family congratulated them and then they were on their way to celebrate at a local restaurant.
It truly was a beautiful day. Congratulations to the both of you, and thank you for letting me be a part of it! I officially love downtown Seattle Courthouse Weddings.
